Beauty E-commerce in Egypt: Merchant guide

Beauty commerce is trust-driven. This guide covers how Egyptian beauty stores improve conversion.

Notify the Egyptian Drug Authority before you sell

Cosmetics may be circulated in Egypt only after they are notified in the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) electronic database. Read the official EDA regulatory guide for cosmetics notification before you list a single product.

According to that guide, the notification number is issued within 10 working days on the normal track or 3 working days on the fast track, and it is valid for 10 years. Build that time into your launch plan. A product without a notification should not be on your store or in your ads.

If you resell another brand, ask the supplier for the notification details of every product and keep a copy on file. If you make or import your own products, use the guide to see what the notification requires from you. When something in the guide is unclear for your case, ask EDA directly rather than guessing.

  • One file per product: notification details, supplier invoice, label photos
  • A calendar note for each notification’s expiry date
  • No ads or listings for products still waiting for a notification number

Trust signals that matter in beauty

Beauty buyers worry about fakes and old stock as much as price. Say clearly where your products come from, whether that is your own brand, an authorised distributor, or a named supplier, and be ready to show proof when a customer asks.

Photograph the actual box you ship, including the label, seal and batch code area. Stock images that hide packaging make careful buyers suspicious. Show the outer packaging you use, so customers know how the parcel will look when it arrives.

Collect reviews from real buyers, ideally with a photo of the product they received. Reply to negative reviews in public with what you did to fix the problem. A store that answers complaints calmly earns more trust than one with only five-star reviews.

Expiry and batch details in every listing

Customers check dates on cosmetics, and some will refuse a parcel at the door if the product is close to expiry. Put the information on the product page before they have to ask.

Rotate stock first-expiry-first-out. Set an internal rule for how close to expiry you will still ship, and move items nearing that line into bundles or clear discounts instead of shipping them quietly. Write the batch number and expiry date in the order confirmation so the customer can match them on delivery.

Heat damages many products. Keep stock in a cool, dry room, avoid leaving parcels in hot storage, and ask your courier how long parcels usually stay in vans during summer.

  • Expiry date, or the expiry range you currently ship from
  • Period after opening, if the label shows it
  • Full ingredient list and skin or hair type
  • Usage steps and any warnings from the label
  • Size or volume, and shade name with a real swatch photo

COD refusals and returns on beauty orders

Reliable public data is limited, but industry estimates put COD refusal in Egypt around 12–18%, and fashion and cosmetics are often cited above 15%. Another estimate puts returns at 15–25% of COD orders against 5–8% for prepaid orders. Shade mistakes and impulse orders from ads are frequent causes in beauty.

Confirm every order on WhatsApp with product, shade, size, quantity and total. For shade products, send a swatch photo in the same message and ask the customer to confirm it. Offer a small discount or free shipping for prepaid orders by wallet or card to shift some volume away from cash.

Consumer Protection Law No. 181 of 2018 gives buyers 14 days to return or exchange goods and 30 days for defective goods. Opened personal-care products raise hygiene questions, so check the law text or a lawyer on how the right applies, then state your policy clearly before the customer orders.

Content and before/after photos: be careful

Educational content sells beauty products: how to apply, which skin type it suits, what to pair it with. Keep claims within what the product’s label and notification support, and describe results in plain, modest language.

If you use before/after photos, use real customers who gave written permission, the same light and angle in both photos, and no filters or editing. Add a note that results vary. Avoid medical promises such as curing acne or stopping hair loss. When you are unsure whether a claim is allowed, ask EDA before you publish.

Brief any creator you work with on the same rules. Their video carries your store’s name, so review it before it goes live.

FAQ

How to increase AOV?+

Use bundles and relevant product recommendations in PDP/cart.

Is content critical?+

Yes. Educational content is a major conversion lever in beauty.

How long does EDA cosmetics notification take?+

The official EDA guide says the notification number is issued within 10 working days on the normal track or 3 working days on the fast track, and it is valid for 10 years.

I only resell other brands. What should I check?+

Ask your supplier for the notification details of every product and read the EDA guide to understand who is responsible. If you cannot confirm a product is notified, do not list it.

Should I show the batch number on the product page?+

Batch numbers change as stock rotates, so the page is hard to keep accurate. Show the expiry range you ship from on the page and put the exact batch and expiry in the order confirmation.
